Founded in 1992 by Guy ALBA and a handful of parents, the European Leukodystrophy Association (ELA ) brings together families working to overcome these genetic diseases, which destroy the myelin (nerve sheaths) of the nervous system. Every week in Europe, 20 to 40 children are born with these diseases, which progressively lead to the loss of all sensory, motor and other vital functions.

To finance its missions, ELA created the "Mets tes baskets" campaign in 1994 to raise awareness of leukodystrophies among schoolchildren. Every year, thousands of schoolchildren take part in this citizenship and solidarity campaign. The campaign has now been extended to the corporate sector.
