The Adidas Superstar were launched in 1969, but their design started 10 years earlier. At that time, Horst, the son of the founder Adi Dassler took over the management of the first Adidas factory located in France (in Alsace). Horst does not have the same vision as his father and wants to open the brand to the tennis market. It is thanks to him that the Stan Smith will see the light of day, the Stan Smith which is none other than the great sister of the superstar.
In 1968, Adidas, which was already located in the USA, decided to tackle the basketball market. To create their new model, they leave the legendary Stan Smith by adding the 3 bands and a new sole. Two models are emerging, a low model called “Supergrip” and a high model called “Pro Model”.
To improve the aesthetics of their model, Adidas decides to add the famous rubber shell to the front of shoes. She had been at the base imagined to allow tennis players not to damage their shoes by serving. The NBA teams who initially were suspicious, ended up adopting this new model of basketball shoes.
It was not until 1969 that the “superstar” was really born because it was at this time that Adidas decided to rename his two models under this name. And this name was not chosen by chance, it is a tribute to the Boston Celtics which this year won the NBA title with the famous shoes on the feet. Once carried by the winning team of the championship, the “superstar” became the star shoes of the basketball players. A few years later, in 1973, the superstar were at 85% of the NBA players, the legend of the superstar was underway. The pair continued to put on NBA athletes until 1979. The superstar was then to be a new audience.
His second life, the superstar found it thanks to hip-hop music then emerging and especially thanks to the “Run DMC” which were the first music group sponsored by a brand. The success of the superstar then continued until the 90s before falling into oblivion.
It was not until 2015 that Adidas resuscitates the pair by launching a series of limited editions in collaboration with personalities like Pharell Williams or David Beckham. The superstar therefore made its comeback after 20 years of absence.
