The famous Stan Smith did not always bear this name. In 1964 Adidas wanted to create a pair intended for tennis lessons, a sport then booming. They then call on French tennis player Robert Haillet who designed the pair. It was not until 6 years later, in 1970 that the German brand with three bands signed a contact with Stanley Smith and thus renamed its “Stan Smith” pair.
If today everyone carries sneakers, at that time, they were still considered as sports equipment and it is the Stan Smith which is at the origin of this change! In the 80s, the Stan Smith won outside the tennis courts, it was the start of “sneakers” (basketball worn for lifestyle purposes) as we know it today.
If the Stan Smith was a great success for years, in 2011, Adidas announced the end of the legendary “Stan Smith” for 2012. The pair is exceeded and is no longer sold enough. But in 2013, the German equipment supplier turns back and announced the return of the Stan Smith in 2014. Bad strategic choice or genius marketing stroke, the fact that Stan Smith's sales left more!
