Put on your sneakers with ELA
ELA , a family association
Founded in 1992 by Guy Alba and a few parents, the European Association against Leukodystrophies ( ELA ) brings together families who are working to defeat these genetic diseases that destroy the myelin (the protective sheath of nerves) in the nervous system. Every week in Europe, 20 to 40 children are born with these conditions, which progressively lead to the loss of all sensory, motor, and vital functions.
ELA 's missions to defeat the disease
Since its creation, ELA has pursued the same missions:
- Helping and supporting families affected by leukodystrophy . ELA provides them with information about the disease, administrative, social, psychological, as well as material and financial support.
- Supporting research: ELA is one of the leading funders of leukodystrophy research. To date, 559 projects have been funded for a total of 47.55 million Euros.
- Raising public awareness. Numerous events punctuate the life of ELA and, in addition to fundraising, contribute to raising awareness of leukodystrophies among the general public.
- To expand its activities internationally, ELA is present in Germany, Spain, France, Italy, Luxembourg, and Switzerland. To coordinate the work of these ELA organizations and because research into leukodystrophies is a global endeavor, ELA International was created in 2015.
ELA 's flagship campaign
To fund its missions, ELA created the "Put on your sneakers" campaign in 1994 to raise awareness of leukodystrophies among elementary, middle, and high school students. This civic and solidarity initiative mobilizes thousands of students every year. The campaign has now been adapted for businesses. Thanks to the "Put on your sneakers" app, employees can take as many steps as possible to support ELA's fight. It's an original way to get your company involved.
