The Converse All Star was created in 1915 by the Converse Rubber Shoe Company, which specialized in manufacturing rubber clogs worn primarily by inmates in American prisons. At the time, it was called the "A11 Star" and designed for playing tennis and basketball.

In 1921, Converse enlisted basketball player Chuck Taylor to promote its new model in American universities.
