The famous Stan Smith wasn't always called that. In 1964, Adidas wanted to create a shoe for tennis, a sport that was booming at the time. They approached French tennis player Robert Haillet, who designed the shoe. It wasn't until six years later, in 1970, that the German brand with the three stripes signed a contract with Stanley Smith and renamed the shoe "Stan Smith."
While today everyone wears sneakers, at that time they were still considered sports equipment, and it was the Stan Smith that sparked this change!
