The famous Stan Smith wasn't always called that. In 1964, Adidas wanted to create a shoe for tennis, a sport that was booming at the time. They approached French tennis player Robert Haillet, who designed the shoe. It wasn't until six years later, in 1970, that the German brand with the three stripes signed a contract with Stanley Smith and renamed the shoe "Stan Smith."
While today everyone wears sneakers, at that time they were still considered sports equipment, and it was the Stan Smith that sparked this change! In the 1980s, Stan Smiths became popular beyond the tennis court; this marked the beginning of the "sneaker" (a shoe worn for lifestyle purposes) as we know it today.
While the Stan Smith enjoyed considerable success for years, in 2011 Adidas announced the end of the iconic "Stan Smith" for 2012. The shoe was outdated and no longer selling well enough. But in 2013, the German sportswear company reversed course and announced the return of the Stan Smith in 2014. Whether it was a poor strategic choice or a stroke of marketing genius, Stan Smith sales took off again!
