The Stan Smith, named after the Californian tennis player Stanley Smith, wasn't always called that. The shoe was first created in 1964 when Adidas wanted to design a shoe for the then-booming sport of tennis. It wasn't until 1970 that Adidas signed a contract with Stanley Smith and renamed the shoe "Stan Smith." At that time, sneakers were still considered sports equipment and not everyday shoes.
